Coronavirus…Quick Tips.

The coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a respiratory infection and is the latest uninvited guest to invade the shores of the US.

A 30+ year old male from Washington State returned to the US from China on January 15, 2020. Feeling unwell he sought care at a medical facility.

7 types have been identified but this recent coronavirus is among one of the more severe infecting cases.

What You Need to Know!

  1. It originated in bats and has been linked to a seafood market in Wuhan China.
  2. China has confirmed the deaths of 9 persons and over 450 sick as a result of this outbreak.
  3. It is a respiratory infection and therefore transmitted via droplets, sneezing, coughing, sharing utensils, etc.
  4. It has the potential to mutate thus changing its mode of attack.
  5. Symptoms include but are not limited to; fever, cough and trouble breathing.
  6. Coronaviruses are part of a large family of viruses.
  7. It can cause severe illness leading up to death, especially to very young, old and immunocompromised persons.

An outbreak of pneumonia caused by this novel coronavirus has apparently been ongoing in China since December 2019.

While it was initially thought capable of only spreading from animal-to-animal, there is growing evidence that limited person-to-person migration is possible.

It is not yet understood how this virus is able to make its’ transmission from animals to humans, this suggests the virus is able to mutate.

Based on his travel history and symptoms, healthcare professionals were able to infer the presence of the new coronavirus.

The CDC confirmed a diagnosis with a specimen sent from the infected patient.

  1. Thanks for the valuable info, shows that you do your homework…..Something to think about here. Ever since I survived a bout of Malaria in Vietnam, back in 1965, I have never had a cold or the Flu, I am 74 now, I was 20 years old then. I wonder if survival of Malaria confers some kind of immunity? Something to think about here, because I used to always get colds, sinus infections, none since…..

    1. That is good news, also the military people were inoculated against many many things. couldn’t afford to have you sick out in the fields.
I work in the ER, so I don’t get sick a lot as well, built up quite an immunity as we are front line to God knows what. I am in all types of body fluids…
